Tip #1: Plan Your Weekly Groceries Around Store Specials
Check out save.ca and flyers.smartcanucks.ca once a week to plan your groceries around store specials. This will help you save money and ensure that you're not preparing the same meals every week.
Tip #2: Pick Your Fav Grocery Store…
… And do most of your grocery shopping there. This will save time in the long run because you know where everything is! A store close to where you live will also save commuting time.
Tip #3: Stick to a List with Categories
Go through your fridge and pantry and write down items to buy under the food group headings: Vegetables and Fruit; Grains; Dairy; Meat and Meat Alternatives and Other. The idea is to fill up your grocery cart with items from the first four groups. If you would like to treat yourself once in a while to something like, ice cream, write that in the Other column.
Tip #4: Stick Around the Perimeter of the Store
Grocery stores are designed so that food from the four food groups are around the perimeter of the store. Processed foods, such as chips and candy tend to be within the aisles. When you first enter the store, try to shop around the perimeter of the grocery store. Enter the aisles to find staple items such as beans or pasta.
Tip #5: Never Shop on an Empty Stomach
Shopping while hungry can lead to buying more than you need! Make sure you have a snack before shopping to ensure you don't buy extra items that you would never eat.
