MEDIA: Nutrition Hangover Cures as seen on CHCH Morning Live

by | Mar 17, 2017

This year St. Patrick’s Day is on Friday March 17th, and I know many of you have plans for the St Patty’s Day weekend.

But have you thought of what you will do after the night of fun? I know what you’re thinking. A greasy breakfast or 3:00 AM pizza run will cure the all mighty hangover.

I hate to break it to you, but you’re better off eating the greasy cheeseburger and fries before a night of drinking. This is because the high fat content helps to slow down the absorption of alcohol.

Another tip: Water is your best friend.

Drink water. Before you head out to the bar, during your night out and before you hit the hay.

Tip: Leave a glass of water on the bedside table so you do not forget it.

These are some of the tips (in addition to others) that I share on CHCH Morning Live about Nutrition Fixes for St. Patrick’s Day Hangovers. Read on for more below!

Morning After Nutrition Fixes

Fruit

Never forget about the power of water, electrolyte and antioxidant rich foods and drinks after a heavy night of drinking. Here are some examples:

Bananas

High in potassium and fructose (natural fruit sugar), this hangover super-fruit will help you replenish your potassium (an electrolyte) levels and stabilize your blood sugar. Low blood sugar the following day is common after a late-night booze fest.

Tomato Juice

Tomato juice is high in electrolytes sodium and potassium in addition to being a fluid needed for hydration. Tomato juice also has a good amount of vitamin C, an antioxidant that can help with free-radical damage done to your cells after a night out of binge drinking.

Oranges or Clementines

High in vitamin C, natural sugar, potassium and fluid-rich, these citrus fruits are a hangover treat!

Bouillon/Broth Based Soup

If you’re not feeling the fruit or tomato juice, and want something more savoury and comforting, try soup. The high sodium content combined with fluid will help you replenish your electrolytes.

Honey Lemon Ginger Tea

If you don’t think you can keep anything down, try this really simple homemade Honey Lemon Ginger Tea recipe. Ginger, especially fresh ginger will help curb nausea and has anti-inflammatory properties. A bit of honey can stabilize your blood sugar and lemon juice will add some of the vitamin C antioxidant. Ginger Ale, (although it tastes good and is nice and bubbly) doesn’t actually have enough ginger to curb nausea.

Matcha Green Tea Recovery Smoothie

Try this delicious Matcha Green Tea Recovery Smoothie. High in polyphenol antioxidants and amino acid l-theanine, which has been proven to protect the liver against alcohol damage, this super-smoothie will help heal your hangover woes!
Now, St. Patrick’s Day comes only once a year and I’m all for everything in moderation. Enjoy some green beer and remember – I got you covered with nutrition hangover fixes! Have fun this weekend, and please drink responsibly!
